What is a tiny house and…

How do I start the process?

Depending on what state or town you’re located in - will depend on how tiny homes are defined. Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) are typically under 900 square feet, and we’ve seen other resources describe tiny homes as under 400 square feet. Sometimes tiny homes are on wheels and moveable, and sometimes they are on a foundation.

From our experience and irregularity across states, codes, regulations, tiny homes and how you can park and place them, depend on the town. Before you reach out to us, you may want to know more about your land, where you plan to park or build your tiny home, and what the actual town ordinances are that will dictate what you can and cannot build or park.

A Quick Case Study

The Berkshire Eagle recently featured a Massachusetts homeowner’s effort to age-in-place by building and placing a tiny home on wheels in her empty lot. Her plan involves placing a moveable accessory dwelling unit (MADU) on her property—a sustainable and forward-thinking solution for long-term living.

However, the article also sheds light on the all-too-common challenges homeowners face when dealing with outdated zoning and building regulations. Many local departments remain outright resistant to these options, creating barriers to alternative housing like MADUs - a legitimate and sustainable way to live.

This article is an example of the systemic red tape, gatekeeping, and resistance to change that is common among town building departments. As we face an ongoing housing crisis, it's more important than ever to push for thoughtful, regulated alternatives like MADUs. We hope this story sparks conversation, awareness, and local advocacy for more inclusive housing solutions.

How Tiny Roots Started:

Like anything else with a dream, a passion for building, and some gusto.

What began as a passion project in 2023 quickly turned into full immersion in the tiny home space. Haley and Emily completed their first tiny home on wheels in 2025 and are on a mission to keep going. Haley has decades in the electrical trade and union, and then later working as a project manager and estimator. Emily has owned and operated a residential remodeling company since 2020 and with a background in business management, they decided to take a leap of faith and up the ante to design and build tiny homes under 600 square feet. What they didn’t know, was that they were going to immediately become housing advocates.

“Once we started down this road and began to truly understand the incredible amount of red tape and gatekeeping to building and parking a tiny home, especially across New England, it became an easy mission to align and advocate with. Housing should be accessible to all, and not just those who have access to half a million dollars (median house price in the US).” — Emily
